Thu Parmar sworn in: collaborates on community-focused work

EDMONTON, AB, October 30, 2025 — Thu Parmar was officially sworn in as councillor for Ward sipiwiyiniwak at City Hall yesterday afternoon, kicking off her work with Edmonton’s new Council on priorities like collaboration, transparency, and real solutions that reflect the needs of Edmonton’s growing communities.

Parmar is the first Vietnamese councillor to serve at Edmonton City Hall.

“Collaboration, optimism, and team-building were a priority during my campaign and continue to drive the daily work I’ll be doing with our new Mayor and Council. Strong, vibrant neighbourhoods start with strong relationships, and this Council will be a community-first team focused on listening to residents and their families. I’m looking forward to what we will accomplish together,” Councillor Parmar said.

After 5 months of daily door knocking and speaking to residents, Councillor Parmar is focusing on basics and foundations:

  • Fostering productive and respectful working relationships with Council, community groups and all levels of government

  • Serving our neighbourhoods and keeping them safe

  • Affordability and using tax dollars wisely

  • Better infrastructure planning that works in consultation with the community, and;

  • Restoring trust between residents and City Hall

A former president of the Cameron Heights Community League, licensed community pharmacist, and vice-president with the Canadian Red Cross, Parmar brings proven experience in financial stewardship, public safety advocacy, and collaborative problem-solving.

Her ability to build relationships with communities across Alberta will make her an asset to Edmonton City Council. Councillor Parmar joins Mayor Andrew Knack and 11 other councillors sworn in on October 29 by Chief Justice of Alberta Ritu Khullar.
