What’s Smart Spending?

It’s Living Within Our Means While Building a Stronger Edmonton

Government should manage its budget like hardworking Edmonton families do—by staying within its means. I don't run my household, or organizations I serve, in the red. I know when to say “no” when resources are limited, and make sure every dollar works harder. Edmontonians are paying more and getting less—higher property taxes, yet worsening roads, snow clearing, and core services. That has to change.

But fiscal responsibility is more than just cutting costs. It’s about protecting what matters to Edmontonians, growing revenue in smart ways, and holding City Hall accountable. My experience has prepared me to deliver that balance. Working with other cities, I’ve seen many creative, effective approaches that Edmonton can adopt.

Proven Fiscal Leadership

  • Community Growth: As Treasurer and Fundraising Director of the Cameron Heights Community League, I grew the bank account from $30,000 to over $1 million by securing grants, private investment, donations, and enhanced membership revenue—proving we don’t need to rely on taxes alone.

  • Healthcare Innovation: Attracted hundreds of thousands in private investment to advance Alberta’s health research, building long-term impact for future generations.

  • Crisis Stewardship: Collaborated across governments, corporations, and donors to secure millions in relief funding during the 2024 Jasper wildfires, ensuring support reached families and organizations quickly.

  • Large-Scale Budgeting: Oversaw budgets exceeding $10 million as Vice President of the Canadian Red Cross, with balancing fiscal stewardship and organizational priorities.

My Priorities for Edmonton:

  • I will champion a predictable four-year rolling tax plan so sharp increases don’t blindside households and businesses. Any rise in taxes must be tied directly to measurable improvements in essential services. I will treat your tax dollars respectfully, spending wisely and keeping costs under control so families and businesses can plan with confidence and see real value for what they pay.

  • I will prioritize investments in what truly matters: public safety, fixing potholes, snow removal, transit reliability, and community infrastructure. These are the basics Edmontonians depend on every day.

  • I will push for priority-based budgeting, where every dollar must be justified. Budgets and spending must be reported openly and in plain language so residents don’t need to wade through 100-page documents to know where their money is going.

  • I will support initiatives that reduce administrative costs, improve service delivery, and embrace technologies that streamline services without compromising quality. I will invite City staff and residents alike to propose innovations and efficiencies that make the government more responsive.

  • I will work for fair funding partnerships with other levels of government, ensuring costs are shared appropriately so City Hall isn’t forced to raise property taxes for non-municipal responsibilities.

Edmontonians want a City Council that spends wisely, delivers the basics, protects their future and respects the people who fund this city. I will bring proven experience, fiscal discipline, and practical solutions to restore trust in City Hall and build a stronger Edmonton for all.
